Digital camera recommendation for those in the market (non-DSLR)...

I have the Canon SX40HS & love it; previously I had the "20" model, but it got damaged and my warranty replaced it with the closest available model - 2 years newer. I love the photos it takes for being a "point and shoot", but not being a professional photographer (and not wanting to lug a bag of lenses everywhere) I didn't want a DSLR.

The only drawback about it that I do not like is that almost all cameras nowadays have the rechargeable battery packs; I wanted one that still took AA's - when you're off on vacation every store sells AAs and they pop in immediately and are ready to go. I don't like worrying about when my battery might die and I have to wait an hour to recharge and miss a good photo opportunity. But, this is just my personal preference.

I think you might grow to prefer the lithium. The battery that comes with yours is the same as mine and is capable of taking almost 400 photos on one charge. A second battery can be purchased for $6 on Amazon. So that takes care of you for almost 800 photos. No AA batteries are going to be able to match that. Heck, pick up a 3rd for another measly $6 and your good for almost 1200 photos.

Ya, cameras go through AAs like candy, and that'll cost you big bucks in the long run. Just get a second factory battery pack and you're good to go.

Also wanted to add, their claims of 400± photos per charge is pretty accurate. On my last round of surveys, I was taking approximately 60 photos per site, 4 sites per day. One battery lasted me almost two full days. And that's walking around the site with the camera on a good part of the time and using the LCD display on the back, not the viewfinder.

I was told that the new LCD displays don't take hardly any more power than the electronic viewfinder.

Ah, that might explain the longevity then.

I remember not too many years back carrying multiple packs of rechargeable batteries and carrying an inverter and charger in the truck and having to alternate batteries all day. Major pain in the butt. I have zero complaints about these lithium batteries.

I carry a Canon T2i with two everyday lenses, a tamron 17-55 and a canon 50mm prime (for human subjects).

Waiting for the world of 3rd Gen cameras to improve (like, say, for Canon to enter the ring) before I switch away from DSLR. I used to carry Canon G series but the T2i and T3i are barely bigger than those anyway. If I *had* to carry a non-DSLR, non-3rd Gen it'd be a Canon S95 or S100.
