does static cling go bad?

I did 3 4x4 write on erase boards for a customer and he loves them, except he called today to ask why magnets don't stick to it.
OK so anyways after I explained that a write on erase board is not made of steel unless you tell me you need to use magnets on it...blah blah...anyways he was all bummed out and I said how about a pile of static cling circles that you can use on the dry erase? he never heard of the stuff and when I explained how it worked he was amazed that I came up with something so fast.

The truth is I came up with a solution quick because I don't feel like fighting to get paid!!!

So I start running 1" circles on my edge and my first try was with Duramark and within a few seconds I remembered that their film printed horribly on static cling. Started again and this time used Gerber foils...same thing... I set the printer for static cling and it prints just awful. I figure this roll is old and something happens to the surface? Would I be correct?

I read on here a few months ago that Static Cling DOES, in fact, go bad. I think someone said that it only has about a 6 month shelf life.

I wish I knew that before I bought a whole roll to do a small job last year. Oh well, lesson learned.

I know the stuff we get for our roland prints horribly, I've always been told this is due to old stock. But i've never had issues with our edge. try wiping it down with alcohol before printing

Yes and No... Static cling typically has a shelf life of 3 - 6 months due to rapid plasticizer migration to the print surface. Some machine can handle this better then others, our Latex seems unaffected by it and the prints are good.... Most Solvents don't fair so well, since you are using an EDGE you may be able to wipe it off with alcohol before it enters the machine and avoid the printing issues.
