Dot Matrix Prints?

Just had a body shop call me, because they need this stripe. He said he can order it for $350 or so, but I'm thinking if I can figure out a way to do it, I can do it for less than that. Not sure. Anyone know anyone that either does this, or have you ever tried to do it on a modern day printer? I'm assuming the worst part will be recreating it and matching these colors. I don't know if I can ever get this "look" again.

Halftone patterns are pretty easy to create in photoshop

I'm using Illustrator CS5.5, so the context of the menus may differ for you.

As an example, i'm just going to do a simple lateral halftone pattern.

1) Draw a solid object (square, circle, whatever) and apply a gradient fill.

2) Select the object and go to "Effect" -> "Pixelate" -> "Color Halftone"

3) The larger you set the radius, the larger the "dotted" effect will be (i use 15-20 most of the time, depending on how large my project is)

4) Click "OK" to apply the halftone effect. The effect is raster, so we need to vectorize it.

5) Ensure the object is selected and click on "Object" -> "Expand Appearance"

6) Select "Object" -> "Live Trace" -> "Tracing Options"

7) Set the path fitting, Minimum Area, and Corner Angle to "1"

8) Click "Trace"

9) Make sure the object is still selected and click "Object" -> "Expand" then click "OK"

Vector halftone completed.... WINNING!

Thankyou for sharing that. That works great for making a mask to use on any file and works fine for Illustrator CS3. Better to teach a man to fish than just give em one.........I will feast on this tip for years to come...

Making them is super easy as described above but here's some pre-built as a resource. Can find tons of them just by googling "vector halftone" (make sure to check that they're released commercial allowed).
