EASY Questions from a noob...

Hey guys, great forum you have here. I have read through most of the car wrap section trying to learn as much as I can about how to do this. I want to wrap my car in Matte Black and in looking at it I have just a few "problem" areas that are preventing me from pulling the trigger on this. The car is a 2000 C5 Corvette and if you guys could give me some good info on these few spots I would be greatly appreciative.

Rear bumper cover: Can this type of bumper be wrapped in one piece? I worry about the sides and the back being at perpendicular angles. Would you start by laying material across the back, then wrapping around to the sides that meet up to the 1/4 panels? How would you tackle this area?


Lettering on rear bumper cover: I have seen people work the material into rivets and have been impressed with that but what about this molded in "Corvette" lettering area? Will I be able to wrap over it, then go back with heat/torch and press the material into the lettering and actually have it stay? is there any way to "shave" the lettering by just "filling" with something and wrapping straight over the top? Again, what would you do in this area.


Fenders: There is a "cove" on the two fenders that has me a little bit concerned and was just wondering if you can do it one piece (probably) and what you would start with/end with.


Thinking about using Oracal 970RA and these areas are really the only thing holding me back on this project. The rest of the car is fairly flat and manageable so if I could get some good info on these tricky spots I will be ready to begin my first wrap. Thanks a lot guys and if there are any other tidbits of information I should know before diving into this please post up.

Welcome Mark! You sure picked a project for your first wrap. I'm assuming (rather hoping) this is not a customers car right? Yes it can be 1 piece and you can wrap into the text. Fender is the least of your worries or hurdles.

Based on your profile, it appears you are skirting around going to a legitimate sign shop.

His industry status is uncertain and, yes, he is a detailer. One of the best wholesale customers I ever had was a detailer who had, among other accounts, the local Budweiser distributor with a large fleet of vehicles. He soon landed their vehicle lettering work and from there ended up a professional sign maker.

I suppose more of an intro is needed here. I work full time as an Auto Body Repair Technician and have been doing that for about 5 years now. I live in MN and in the summer as a side business I run a small detailing company. I work at that most weekends and the occasional week nights when needed. While I have entertained the idea of offering stone shields and simple vinyl graphics I am by no definition a sign/graphic company at this time. I was unaware that I needed to be to post on these forums and if I have broken any rules I sincerely apologize.

The car in question is my own personal car that I enjoy working on when I have free time. By now I am sure everyone has seen the thread on the BMW forum about a guy who covered his M3 in matte black. He was inexperienced and used crappy materials (calendered vinyl) and it turned out o.k. That gave me the idea to do some good research, ask the pros, get some nice vinyl, and give it a try myself. This forum is great and there is a lot of good information on it.

So if I haven't broken any forum rules let's get back to it. So far I have one vote for being able to successfully wrap the "corvette" lettering on the back of the bumper. Also I think they said that everything (bumpers) can be done in one piece without too many problems. And fenders will be child's play and no need to worry about the cut outs.

I want to thank anyone in advance for posting and trying to help me out. Everyone on here is really cool and the whole forum is very laid back. I have been doing my research and watching vids on youtube and I must say that this forum is probably the most valuable tool I have come across.

The reason the information here is as good as it is, is that we are a community of sign making professionals. We specifically exclude end users seeking to do their own work from our ranks.

I'm the guy who approved your registration, but based on what you just posted, I gather you have no interest in entering the field of sign making as a way of earning your living ... in whole or in part. That being the case, you haven't met our primary criteria for being a member here. As such, I really have no choice but to terminate your membership.
