Edge 2 Fan

About a year ago, I noticed that our Edge 2 fan wasn't running about the same time that another Signs101 member had the same thing happen and started a thread about it(here http://www.signs101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53650)

To quickly summarize - his problem was that the fan on his Edge 1 wasn't getting power so he rigged up a way to power the fan independently.

In my case, we had a spare Edge 1 so I just sat our Edge 2 to the side and went back to old faithful.

Now I'm doing some "housekeeping" and am revisiting our Edge 2 to see if we can get it back in action.

So this morning, I disconnected the fan from our Edge 2 and hooked it up to our Edge 1. It worked fine, so that rules out the fan as the problem.

Then I reinstalled the Edge 2 fan back into the Edge 2. It turns on, but at a much slower speed than when hooked up to the Edge 1. Next, I tested the voltage on each unit. On the Edge 1 it's 12VDC but on the Edge 2 it's only 3VDC.

So now I'm wondering if maybe the Edge 2 simply has some type of temperature switch that varies the voltage to the fan based on cooling needs. Can anyone verify this for me or offer any other advice?

evening squeegee... I can't verify or advise anything tonight from memory, but I will say that I use the Edge2 also, so I would be willing to check a few things for you if other help doesn't come along before I get the chance. I've not done too much rooting around behind the plastic cases yet, except a power supply or something like that I had to replace while getting play-by-play instructions from Gerber tech support...

...but, anyway if it would help to do a voltage test on my fan, I'd be happy to do one on Monday (or maybe even tomorrow) if you gave me some instructions on getting to it. I wanted to ask you some CNC questions anyway...

Here a quick picture tutorial for iSign or anyone else who might have time and be willing to do this.

By the way, the temperature in my shop is about 75 degree F which may be important if my theory is correct.

I'm pretty sure the power supplies are the same for both models... although mine didn't have the aluminum cover in the second picture you posted.

The power supply brings the power in, and splits it to three different "outs": one to the print head, one to the "brains", and one to the fan.

The section that sends power to your fan is probably wonky... mine was pooched entirely, and wasn't giving ANY power to the outputs. Could be a fix as simple as a resistor. See if you can pull the "fan" board out, and look for any burnt spots on it. Because the fan was the only thing effected by the bad supply, I was able to power it externally (independently).
