Edge foil choices....

Hey guys I got an edge with a bunch of foils but aside from 2 sets of CMY process foils most of them were odd colors. So Im about to put in an order for some colors and wanted to get the opinion of guys that have been using this thing for years.

Black. Process or Spot? I feel like I will use more spot black then process but I do have 2 sets of the other 3 process colors. Can I use the spot black in a process print? How bad would it look?

White. Is it worth picking up? Can I use it to print on dark colors? Or would I be better off using white vinyl and covering it with a colored foil?

3rd party foils. Zeronine or Duracoat which is better? Is it worth saving a few bucks? How bad will the printing suffer with these 3rd party foils?

I only want to grab 2 or 3 foils like black red and white but want to see what the best bet would be just to get me going on simple bulk sticker orders.

Black foils are probably the most valuable, either spot or process. I must confess, I use process black in place of spot black whenever I run out of spot black and I never notice any difference in any way but I would not use spot black in place of process black. White is one of the greatest advantages of the Edge, though you won't use it all the time but it should be in your inventory. Zero Nine or Duracoat...well I use Duracoat with good results and though I never used Zero Nine, I've heard mixed opinions about them. A good red is essential, Ruby Red is my first choice, Atomic is nice and I do not like Tomato Red.

I've never been happy with CMY printing and always use the Process Black for a true CMYK when printing process. Spot Black is our most commonly use spot color followed by Spot White, Ruby Red, Gold Metallic, and Cobalt Blue. Spot White is used a lot for white on clear film or as a base coat for any color other than black on clear or non-white films. We use a lot of Duracoat which is also sold by Advantage Sign & Graphic Solutions under the brand name of Apex, and like it better than ZeroNine. In testing it we determined that it performed equal or better than Gerber foils. Duracoat also has an excellent clear UV/Abrasion Guard foil for outdoor applications that you are not laminating.

thanks for the replies guys. I got a duracoat process black and duracoat ruby red to start. Duracoat seems to be the better deal since you can refill them for a fraction after the first purchase.

A little off topic, but sort of on topic.

I got summa samples from Summa of what their dc4 prints. All I can say, is WOW! Well, I can say more than that but man oh man their prints are beautiful! The CMY is sweet and the spot files are just crazy beautiful.

They offered to print some custom samples using my artwork and material of choice. I can't wait to see how the machine does on convex material.

Waiting like a little kid on Christmas for my samples from GMS to see the edge samples to!
