Edge Fx Full color cmyk printing ?

Edge Fxers,

So far only spot projects as my core biz is helmet decals. However, I am considering buying proccess ribbons incase the full color jobs come up.

1. Do you guys have close up pics of full color prints you can share? I want to see the dots per inch and how they look.

2. Should I just stay away from cmyk and continue to do spot color ?

What is your take and what do you do with your Edge ?

1. All you have to do is a test print of any shape filled with process colors. Try duplicating one several times and then set each to different halftone type and with those that include it set the LPI to 43, 55 and 70.7 to evaluate. Those LPI numbers are chosen because they are harmonics of the frequency of the Edge print head.

While it is true that with thermal printing there is a greater graininess than with liquid inks, I think you do yourself a disservice to try to evaluate them at extreme closeups. To do so is to ignore then many benefits of process color printing such as the infinitely greater number of colors you can reproduce and the ease of not having to deal with chokes, spreads, traps and overprint settings, not to mention being able to print photos, illustrations and all the various raster images that will come your way.

2. Staying away from CMYK or not is your call. I can only tell you that you will be leaving at least half the money you could be making on the table if you do. Here are some examples of process color Edge printing from my portfolio.

BTW, I cringe when you address Edge users as Edge Fxers. There are lots of Classic Edge, Edge LE and Edge 2 owners and users here, as well as Edge FXs, who can contribute to your knowledge.
