Edge

We need to repair or replace our Edge LE. It has served us well since 1996!

When the Edge FX came out it was full of problems. Have they been resolved or would you still avoid that model?

If I look for used ones, is there a model to avoid? There was a test involving Cobalt Blue to check the print head. Anyone remember what to do?

The Edge FX appears to have had its problems resolved and has some interesting features in the area of higher resolution printing and greater productivity. The main negative is the need to either replace all your foils or purchase adapters so you old foils can be used.

The test involving Cobalt Blue is to print a full 11.8" block set at 100% fill followed by a second block set at 50% fill. Then check for dropouts and uneven print.

Why is the test always done with Cobalt Blue? And other than a dead pixel, what problems show up when doing this test? In my experience, drop outs and other flaws tend to be related as much to the foil and/or dust and lint as anything else.

If someone is selling an Edge and doesn't have software to drive it (someone is) is there a firmware test print that can be run instead of the Cobalt Blue test?

Cobalt Blue is preferred because it has a very high saturation of pigment. If the printhead is getting too old and not printing an even coat, it will show up most readily with this test. I don't recall any of the firmware tests being useful for this most telling of print tests.

I know of an Edge LE that is available and can be had for a really good price if you are interested. PM me if you want more info.
