Encoder Strip Replacement Technique

I searched the forums and found nothing relating to the best way to replace the encoder strip on my SP540V. I took the strip out hoping to flip it, but it was junk.(new one ordered) Had it in service mode so I could shuffle the head/cutter out of the way as needed. Dang thing took two of us to fish it back in.

I figure someone here knows the fast, simple way to remove/replace encoder strips.

There is a groove in the chassis of the machine that lines up perfectly with the encoder sensor. If you can get the bottom of the encoder into that groove it should be easier to thread it through the sensor.

Thanks Vander. I'm probably being too careful not wanting to handle it too much that's causing the issue. My first attempt might have made a good comedy video.

i tend to feed about 75% of it into that groove, then move the head over it. With that much in the groove you can just pull it from the other end after the head passes over. It makes an even easier time if a second person holds the "coil" of encoder strip, while you do the threading. it's easier not having to juggle a fragile strip.

No service manual, but I will manage.

Wear gloves. Like someone else said. Start with head at one end, lay strip into groove in machine, slide head to left over strip, then pull strip over to connection point. Easier with two people but one can do it. Key is gloves.

Good tip. Got a ton of powder free nitrile gloves in the shop.
