Epson SC S50670 take up reel not working

I have a really tough time believing that a take up reel get disabled when trying to do multilayer printing. I've got a simple file (20 words) that the client wants to see color on both sides of a clear material but have the letters opaque. In theory printing with white in in a multilayer print would work (print color, print white, print color). All in all the print will work but on our Epson SureColor S50-670 the take up reel doesn't work when printing this way. I just spend almost an hour n a half on the phone with Epson techs to come up with the conclusion that onyx (10.2.5) must be disabling the take up reel when multilayer print is selected.

Has anyone ever run into something like this or know a work around other than letting the print scroll out all over the ground (forgot to mention that this print is 8' long).

I can certainly see why it gets disabled, since it has to bring the material back in.

What I don't get is that when I have the material on the take up reel and I run a nozzle check the take up reel winds the material when it pushes it forward, but unwinds it again when it scrolls back a bit when its finished and the take up actually unwinds it (not being pulled).
