Erase Gradient in PS

I don't know if photoshop does this or not, but I'm looking at doing a Gradient Erase.

I know that this can be accomplished with a layer mask or just by doing it by hand (low opacity erase, several passes) but was wondering if there was a true gradient eraser.

I have an image that will be feathered Left, Top, Right but I want it to have a nice long gradient from 100% opacity to 0% on the bottom. It's going over color and part of another image, so it has to be truly transparent. I know how to do it with a layer mask, but was wondering if there was something that I was missing to have a true deletion.

I guess if I did the lasso tool and left a lot of space on the left, top and right, I could do a HUGE feather on the bottom.

Anyone else have any other options? I've ran into this several times in the past and was just wondering if there is something that I'm missing.

You can apply the layer mask and it will do what you are asking. The image would then have the true "gradient erase" you are looking for.

If you don't want to do this with layer masks, you could always create an alpha channel and draw the selection you want there (gradient, feather, whichever editing tools you like). Once the selection was complete you could load the selection into the active layer and hit the appropriate delete key... But I'd tend to think that the layer mask option is just as easy 99% of the time.
