Error when opening Large Dimensional jpgs in Illustrator

I am trying to open large dimensional (39" wide by 58" high, DPI set at 250) Jpg files, in Illustrator CS3 and get an error not enough memory. File sizes are only around 4-5 megs.

I have tried these files on several computers as well as CS4 and CS4, same error every time.
My work around is open the jpg in Photoshop CS3 and save as .psd, then I can open the file in Illustrator with no errors.
Has anyone experienced this? Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated. I checked the forums and googled and could not find anything.

Thanks,
Terry

that seems pretty small actually, compared to a lot of the stuff I've opened (large truck wraps backgrounds) and my computer is old, plus you can open it when it's opened and resaved as a PSD. Possibly the JPEG was saved incorrectly or just in a format that Ill has a hard time with?

Try just opening the JPEG with photoshop and re-saving it as a JPEG (make sure it's 8bit, standard, etc) and then opening it again.

Where are you getting the JPEG images from?

4 gigs of ram. I did not know you could/needed to set whats alloted in the prefs. gives me something to check tomorrow. I am not sure about the scratch disc, when I get to work tomorrow. I will check.

Thanks everyone for the help!

Yes I have opened and worked on eps files over a gig in size (no problems). I think it has something to do with the large dimensions HxW, or at least I think so.

Illustrator allows documents up to 227"x227", so you should have no prob with a 58" image... try my other sugg posted above, again; where (what program) are you getting the JPEGs from.

I'm thinking there is an issue with the files - I just exported a jpg same size same dpi and it was 35 megs not 3-4...might be some bad compression going on or something...

edit: just tried to place it in illy and got the same message (only 2g ram here tho)

The jpgs are from a digital camera. I tried your other suggestion of opening in photoshop and saving as jpg, still get the same error. Only re saving as psd, will this work.

Additionally, Someone told me to switch the allotted memory illustrator uses in Illustrator under preferences, for the life of me I cannot find it. Scratch disk is set to c:/

Thanks!
