Ever been to Havana Cuba?

I'd like to take a trip to Havana for a photo taking holiday. Not the resort area of Varadero, but right in Havana; it's a gold mine for photos. The main issue is where to stay. I've heard of these "Casa Privadas" where you stay in a person's home, and am wondering about that. There are a few hotels that are inexpensive, but they are a 30 min drive from Havana, and the ones that are right in Havana are much more expensive.

I've heard that it's very safe (I'd be walking around with a camera around my neck), but I also read on one travel website that crime/theft/robbery is on the rise. (?)

Anyway, any insight, tips or other suggestions would be appreciated.

I wonder how many of our American members will answer this question.....Seeing how they are banned from travel to Cuba....

I would love to visit Cuba. I was hoping to see the ban lifted but that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon.

It's not that hard to get there and it's techically legal as long as you don't spend any money there.

I've got a couple of customers who used to go down every summer. They would fly to Mexico, then to Cuba from there. They both ALWAYS mentioned that they could pick up a gorgeous "escort" for the week and live like kings for very little money. Both of them rented apartments in peoples homes to stay in. I think they were separated from the actual house Colin, so it wasn't like they were sharing a bathroom or anything.

Of course that was 5 or 6 years ago, things may have changed.

Ehhh, ya, no interest in that, just want to take a bazzillion photos and enjoy the warmth. You people who live in warm, sunny climes, have it good. Winter SUCKS!

Yeah, there's lots of that stuff down there. If you learn how to do a good Cuban style Cha Cha Cha.... you'll fit right in with the locals..........

For the most part.... Merengue isn't Cuban. It's Dominican. They do a form of it, but it's quite slower than true Merengue. Merengue is actually the easiest dance for Gringos to learn across the globe.
Other than folk music, Cha Cha Cha is all about Cuban... with something called Cuban Motion. Cuba plays a big part in many of today's Latin rhythms and other music around the world. Nothing better than listening to some old Cuban orchestras. That's what I'd like to go see... and then down to Argentina for the Tango and end up in Puerto Rico for Mambo and Salsa.
That would be sweet. :thumb:


Hope ya make it down. They say Black & Whites make the best photos down there, even though it's a very colorful place.

I've been and legally as a US citizen. It is like going bacl in time imo. Housing I stayed @ a tourist hotel & I also stayed in a rental attached to someone's home. We walked the strets,ate with locals & never did I feel unsafe. I would love to go again (legally) I am concerned that when / if the embargo is dropped that it will change things dramatically in many ways..wish everyone could see it before that ever happens.

have a blast. Good people,good weather,good food...leader of the country..well i'll just keep that comment to myself

I nearly went as an American with an international group of skydivers coming in through the back door. I regret that vacation did not materialize along with a chance to be a part of the world record 400 way skydive that was completed in Thailand. Timing is everything in life.
