Fade in photo?

Hello, yesterday working with Coreldraw and Photopaint I struggled putting a black fade into a photo , the vehicle is black and I was trying make it look like the photo was fading into the black of the vehicle. I tried a few different ways using both programs but it never worked out. Hopefully someone can help me so I can figure it out for future jobs.

Sounds like a job for Photoshop. You can do some creative things with layer masks.

Put a black rectangle behind the photo and then use the interactive transparency tool to fade the photo into the black rectangle. You can do this in either Corel Draw or PhotoPaint.

Apply a layer mask on the layer you want to do this to, gradient black and white, black is subtractive and white is additive so where the gradient white is it will be the picture, where the gradient black is...you will have it blending into the car. Read about it here.

Ya gotta have a background behind the image so that when you feather the edge some thing shows through.

You could do it the opposite way and put the rectangle on top, then punch a feathered hole through the mask.

Now matching the black on the vinyl to the black on the vehicle is another thing!

George Kern, Thanks for the tutorial about masks. That was an extremely basic breakdown and very easy to understand, just wish I had a tablet as it is a pain in the a$s to try to do that with the mouse.
