FC-8000 160 width help

I just got a FC-8000 160 and when it measures my media after I lock down the pinch rollers it gives me inacurate measurements. Please help me. I loaded a 54" piece of material and it reads it at either 48", 50" and sometimes 52". Am I loading the material wrong or something?

It measures from the inside of the outside pinch rollers that you put down. That is your cuttable area. You can maximize the size by adjusting the roll so the rollers are on the very end of the media. But you will never get 54" of cuttable area from a 54" roll. I usually get a 1.5" under what ever the roll size is if I position the rollers at the ends.
You don't want to position the pinch rollers to close to the end though because if it's not exactly straight then you will get a run off or a misaligned roll.
