FC7000 plotter- what kind of cable connection

What kind of cable and port are you using on your graphtec or vinyl express plotter? I think I am having communications errors and I believe it is the cable. I have my VE-Q100/FC7000 connected to com4 via serial cable. Can you use the USB option and full bidirectional communication?
Also, does anyone use the laser pointer / 4 point registration mark option?

I run the USB cable, just make sure to keep the run as short as possible (under 15'). I do use the registration mark sensor for contour cutting as well.

Hey thanks. I just installed the usb driver and hooked her up via usb and all is well. So it was the cable I'm assuming.So much for spending the 50 some odd dollars on the official Graphtec serial cable - it was only a couple of months old. WTF.
Back to work!
