File Names

I'm doing a massive push on my font library right now (installed and not installed) and am noticing something that I've always wondered about: Why do some file names use underscores instead of a normal space, and does it make any difference?

Hold over from the DOS days when you couldn't have spaces in file names.
Not needed any more.

i still do, just out of habit. i also still abbreviate and/or leave out vowels to keep files names short. also not necessary anymore, but i REALLY hate mile long file names.

actually, i have a list of things that bug me about the way people name files.
#1 pet peeve... files that come in with MY business name!!! i guess they do that so they can easily find it when need to send it to me. how stupid is that!

my file names are so easy, even a caveman can read them.

example: Pugs & Ponies, logo files, stationary, post cards, ads and wrap.

Yep - I still use the underscore too. I usually name my files like this:
C/Customer Store Name/Yard Signs/Proposal_013012.cdr - That way the date, customer and job type is all right there. The downfall here though is looking up recent files I have opened because they are all named Proposal_013012.cdr....Not too bad though. It had worked for us for years. Although I really like Gypsy's idea too! Same idea, different execution. :)

What others have said, the characters I see and use are _-+.[]() and occasionally the & sign though that is recent and not doss compatible. My files are ussually named CUSTOMER-NAME_(Invoice #)_mm-dd-yyyy_(version or job name ... or both).(file extension) easy enough for me to search for and find no matter where it goes or what happens to the files. I don't use parentheses though.

yes, i should be more careful....
some of my best clients are cavemen.

also wanted to mention that, for me, having the dimensions in the file name is really helpful. i often get calls, where the client is in a rush for an ad (and pinching pennies) asking what ads they have that matches or are close to a size they currently need. checking their ad folder, at a glance i've got all the ad sizes.

I do it out of habit from my web background, I always thought it looked ugly when you would get "%20" in place of every space in a url.

Nice idea adding the date.

My files are on an external hard drive, in a file "Artwork". Each file is listed by customer, then project. So its set up like: F/Artwork/<customer name>/truck lettering/unit #5... The customer may have files for business cards, truck lettering, signs...etc.

And Proofs are saved as proof, then copied as a working file. That way, I still have a copy of the proof.

Also in the working file, I also save what color I worked with. So the colors are color separated, and there is a line of copy telling me that it was Oracal 751-031 red...

We name our files with the order number first, this works for us because we don't really mess with any artwork until we have an actual order

Letter "A" as in the first item on the invoice. This helps if an invoice has more than one item to be printed.
FINAL version for print.

In order to find artwork, we start with a previous invoice. When we used to be retail, we still numbered this way, but we kept it all in individual client folders so we would have a place to put their supplied artwork and other stuff that didn't fall into the system.
