Fill for Engraved Metal

I have a buddy who has some metal parts that were engraved. He wants to fill the engraving with black and maybe silver or gold. He described a materail that he's seen used that isn't paint, more like a resin, that is heated an used to fill the engraved letters. It has to be outdoor durable. Any idea what the materail may be or where to look for it?

He's referring to paint sticks, they are similar to crayons, I hate using them, I prefer a good enamel paint when we engrave tags, spread it on with a business card, get as much off before it dries, then after it dries, do a final clean with acetone.

Yep, that seems to be the consensus. I did some searching and found some good tips on a web site for gun refinishing.
