Finish OVER signgold?

I had a client do it. Wood transom that was stripped and varnished. He applied several coats before I applied the signgold. Then applied several more over it.
You have to apply several coats over it before you can fine sand for the final coat.
Personnaly I prefer applying on finished coat and then apply a clear cast file with 1/8" border.
