I'm stumped over what typeface was used on the Stone Temple Pilots album "No. 4." At first glance it had to be some semi-bold version of Century, or maybe a Bodoni. Yet I can't find anything that matches the lettering in the attached sample. MyFonts' What the Font filter doesn't turn up any accurate results. I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas.
I have a pretty big collection of store bought CDs, which I've ripped into LPCM WAV format and exported in high bit rate MP3 and/or lossless FLAC formats for portable use. Anyway, I've been messing around updating cover art images in some of these albums. Normally Google Images, Amazon or Apple Music are decent sources to grab a good quality cover image, re-size in Photoshop, etc. In some cases the album art available online sucks. That's what's happening in the case of this STP album. With the cover art being so simple it would make sense to just do a vector-based re-creation of it using stock fonts and then export a PNG image of the results. That would take far less time than cleaning up all the little nicks and scratches of a scan from the paper cover of a 23 year old retail CD. Gotta figure out what typeface was used across the top though.
The "No. 4" part is pretty easy to handle; it's just Futura. I can use Futura Now Variable to dial-in the exact weight of the lettering. The white star on the album cover is odd; the right half is wider then the left half.
