font not working in illustrator

I downloaded a font and am trying to use it in illustrator. The font is installed on the computer. The font is not listed in the font drop down at the top of illustrator when scrolling it, but if i start to type it it pops up, but when i try to select it or hit enter in just jumps to the next font alphabetically on the drop down. This is really annoying so I downloaded the same font from another website... same thing. This is the part that gets me. The font works fine in photoshop. Any ideas?

In your Preferences>Type - turn off missing glyph protection. That will probably fix it.

It could be a windows update issue.
