Font question

Is there a way to cut a font that has a stroke on the letters. Everytime I try to cut a word with a stroke on it just converts to the original font. I'm using Flexi pro or Illustrator.

In Flexi go to "arrange" and click "convert stroke to outlines" then weld it together.

In Illustrator, go to Object>Flatten transparency> then convert strokes to outline. Then, use the pathfinder palette to merge the stroke and fill.
