I have to put in a sign in a parking lot, its just a small sign telling hours on a 4x4 stud and have to dig the hole. Is there a standard height they generally should be so they dont stand too high or too low?

you will have to contact the city code office and verify the needed height.

for us there is a 96" clearance

in the few projects I did in Virginia, they
suggested 80" from the bottom of the sign
(for ADA clearance) and traffic type signs
were 7'-0" measured from the bottom.

Honestly if your asking this question here, you really don't care about local regulations so use common sense....

what would work best????

there's regulations for a reason and there's common sense for a reason, pick one.....
