Getting a new Epson Printer!

Hi Folks,

Getting our first wide format printer in the form of Epson S80600. Feeling excited but also a bit lost as this is our first in house printer. What are the things I have to be aware of when the installation is being done by the Epson guys and what are the things I need to specifically ask the installation guys to train us with?

Tell them to hold off and bring you an S60600 instead. Get a good RIP, not Epson Edge. What laminator & plotter are you getting?
If this i your first printer you're never going to need those other special colors you get with the 80600.
We have 4 60600 printers and they all print all day, and we still never need those colors.

Pay attention to the training about the maintenance. If you maintain the printer properly, you should have very few issues down the line. Many people either completely ignore it or do it infrequently and they're the ones who end up needing heads sooner rather than later.

We've had our S80 since January and it's been great. I liked the S70670 it replaced but the S80 is even better and easier to use. The RIP that comes with the plotter is a lite version of Onyx, but you should do yourself a favor and get the full version of Onyx, either Production House or Thrive. And you should make sure your dealer includes a full training on Onyx.

The training for the printer itself is relatively rudimentary: How to turn it on, why not to turn it off, how to maintain the ink cartridges, do the cleanings, how to load vinyl and create vinyl settings, how to use the takeup reel and so on. The Epson Edge dashboard is how you can get profiles and updates, and they'll show you how to do that. But when you actually USE the printer it's the RIP that you'll be dealing with. It makes far more sense to be trained on a full RIP product that you will actually use in day to day work rather than just the Lite version that has reduced functionality and then have to learn a RIP all over again when you find out you need it to do what you want to do.

I run 3 of them, very few issue over several years of running them. I use Colourgate for my rip. Onyx is not my fav anymore, maybe 15 years ago, but not anymore.

I just noted the OP is from Hong Kong. Who knows whether any RIP is included with the printer there. Or what RIP you can purchase. Nonetheless, I recommend starting out with a full RIP product that can print, panel, cut, profile, all of it, and learning that from your install instruction.

Yup..there is no RIP bundled...only Epson Edge comes with the machine.

Epson Edge is just a printer and media management app that runs from your browser. It doesn't print. So you will need to talk to your dealer about buying a RIP.

We have a 60600 and love it

Install was weird… guy was had over 20 years of experience but had never installed an epson. Epson had upgraded the stand from what was shown in the manual and it took us an hour to convince he had installed it on the stand backwards… It’s a ridiculously easy to operate and maintain printer though and even this tech who had never seen one got it up and running.

There is very little training on how to use the printer as there really isn’t much to learn. Maintenance is minimal and mainly automated.

As others mention you need to buy rip software and this is where I really think it would have been good for us to get proper training on it. We bought a full onyx package (flatbed cutter license and multiple printers) and were supposed to be trained on it but our install guy thought he was only there for the epson install. To this day we still struggle in thrive and have never gotten our Zund or other machines working on it. My advice would be to pick out a good rip and make sure you get training. The epson is a walk in the park and it’s the rip you will have a hard time learning

You can learn the machine info watching a few videos. You can't learn advanced onyx by just watching videos... there is just none avaliable on the issues you will run into.

No we were able to print perfectly using the Edge..only thing we are not sure is if its perfect with the color management, print and cut production flow. For nesting we have our own illustrator tool.

Epson Edge is something hard to work with. We, for over 12 years, use Ergosoft RIP, have great conistence, color and usability.

As a tech that works on Epson S80s, I would say the most common issues are head related, electrical problems and, pump caps. As for what you can do: 1. Do the regular physical cleaning but take care NOT to wipe the down the actual nozzle face of the head, just the frame. 2. Keep the printer on a surge protector, 3. take extra care with loading media, It's difficult to pinpoint but oftentimes I replace a head it looks like the head had scraped across something, and 4. be conscious of your environment and loading practices in relation to static, static pops can also cause electrical failures.

Also I would recommend keeping cleaning solution instead of white unless you plan to use it often. Very easy to switch back and forth between them. It does waste some ink but better then clogging the head and circulation pump if you don't use the white often.

Edge is 100% a rip. Use it every day alongside onyx. Onyx is 100x better but some machines hate onyx.
The Epson Edge on your computer must be an entirely different animal from the Epson Edge I have on my computer. Unless the bundled version of Onyx is called Epson Edge. I don't have that any more because when they came to install mine they took the bundled software away since I had bought the full version of Onyx.

Epson S80600 is a great machine, had mine for 3 yrs no issues, Epson edge easy to use but limited. If you plan on doing any cut coutour jobs you will need a different rip
