gold leaf clear back paint on glass?

anyone every try using clear for back paint on gold leaf instead of color?
im experimenting figured i'd ask before trying tomorrow.

You nead back-up enamel.

You can use a clear...problem is if your hand lettering it's hard to see what your doing.

There wouldn't be any benefit to using clear back up. You need the color back there to give the image some kind of punch from the other side. Most people will clear over the entire job once everything is dried, but not before the Japan color is applied.

We used to back up with black and then after cleaning the gold we'd do a gentle wash with lacquer thinner to remove the black. We could then varnish and have gold on both sides. The black will provide more durability though.
