Got my soldier home last week.

Did his four years. He'd grown quite a bit as I had expected. Never saw combat but was trained as a combat medic. Spent a good deal of time in Korea.

I am so proud of him. He was a kind of mis-directed kid, playing in a punk band, a bit aimless in life. Joined up, scored real high on their entrance tests and got to pick his MOS. Chose medic.

Now he's enrolled in college up in Seattle for the spring quarter on the GI Bill. What a great thing that is! One year at Community College and then off to the University of Washington. (just like his older bro)

I heartily recommend the armed services for kids today. It certainly gave my kid some great training while he served his country.

Do they take 12 year olds yet ??!!?!?!?!?

:)

Nope, no twelve year olds, but funny story. I did ask him the maximum age the US Army will take a guy and he said 38 years.

Then he laughed and told me that some of those cats (older recruits) had a bit more of a hard time of it in boot camp! These young flat bellied kids are in such better shape than your typical 38 year old.

Dido - Although I see nothing wrong with playing in a band... :rock-n-roll:

Nah, nothing wrong with it. Banged around with one myself years ago. But he dropped out of high school to play base and travel around Oregon. That's what I was referring to.

Eventually earned his GED. Then joined up. Wasn't dumb, just not motivated.

What prompted him to join? I have a nephew that i think could really benefit in the same way your son did? I don't think he's headed down the wrong path or anything... can't seem to find a path at all... kinda just in limbo.

Enlisting seems like the kind of thing a someone would have to have a desire to do. Possibly with some encouragement, but not so much as to feel he wasn't making the choice fully on his own.

Did your son have friends that enlisted, just wander into a recruiting office?

Sure would like to hear any advice you have to offer.

thanks... and so glad to hear your son is doing well!

Congratulations on making it back. I did 20 years and I don't regret it.
Hope he does well in college, he's going to have an advantage in that. Probably a bit more discipline to study rather than party.

Forest was unhappy working at Safeway, Starbucks, etc. And yes, he did in fact have some friends that had enlisted. My son actually interviewed with all branches of the service. My other son (step son actually) had enlisted with the Marines and was always telling us of his exploits.

So I think it was a combination of those three factors. Your nephew may indeed be a candidate. One thing though, the Army is at 110% strength right now. That doesn't mean they won't take new recruits but they can be a heck of a lot pickier.

The economy is down so a lot of guys are enlisting (or trying to). Conversely, since there aren't a lot of jobs out there, some soldiers that are in the Army are re-upping instead of getting out, which doesn't make room for a lot of new recruits. Sword cuts both ways, I guess.

Also, advancement is a bit slower. Forest should easily have made sergeant, but again, with no one leaving it's hard to get promoted. As it was, he made only corporal. No big deal...he's okay with that.
