I just purchased the online file folder system from Domainspricedright.com this thing is cool as hell. It will actively sync all my files from my desktop computers for back up purposes. It also will allow me to map the online folder as a drive to my multiple computers. So now I can access my art files from any computer I want.

Its like dropbox on steroids. Its great and affordable I just purchased 100 gbs of storage for $30.00 for the year.

I am running the sync now to backup all my files. You can configure it for different scheduled syncs depending on your needs. I am paranoid so I have it doing active backups anytime I change a file or add a folder to my artwork folder. I won't ever need to worry about not having my data backed up again.

I believe you can also purchase this same setup from GoDaddy and a few other companies that are resellers of Wild West domains (GoDaddy's parent company). Check with your registar to see if they offer this. If they do its well worth the small expense. I wish I did this years ago.

Just wanted to update. The service is great however, the initial synching of my files has been taking a while. Right now I am at just about 28 hours and only half way through. I am only backing up 13 gigs currently.

If anyone decides to do this I highly suggest slaving a drive just for the purposes of letting it run the sync with a copy of the files you want to have synced. My files have been tied up since I started because any change I make slows down the whole process even further.

So.. according to your update and my calculations, your current progress could be depicted as such.

Ha Ha Ha Funny! Well, it finished this morning. So now I am all set, and since the drive is now mapped to my computers I don't have to run it again. I just save to the mapped drive now and I am always backed up on the cloud.

To anyone thinking of Carbonite for large storage... don't.
I have about 400gig backed up there with another 200 pending. They say "unlimited storage" but thats just bull. As you upload more, they slow the speed right down.
The last 100 gigs has taken over 60 days. I'm creating new files almost as fast as they are backing up and I'm still 3 months behind in online backup.

Oh and online Storage...Add to that the cost of uploading your data through whatever provider you are currently using. Ouch.

Get a firesafe and a raid drive.

Good grief. I hate to think how long it would take to get yourself back online if you actually lost your data. There are much more efficient ways to back up large amounts of data than Carbonite or similar online resources. They are fine for the casual home user or even a business that deals in word and excel docs. Not at all ideal for designers.

The online File Folder from Godaddy or Domainspricedright can be a mapped drive to your computer. This will allow you to keep your data on the cloud and use it just like you would your local hard drive. If you have a decent high speed connection you won't even notice the difference.

The 'cloud' may be fine for working with with smaller files but how long is it going to take to write the file directly to the cloud when you hit "save" on a complex vehicle wrap designed at full scale? Meanwhile said design program is rendered unusable until that file is done saving. What happens when the 'cloud' fails or files for bankrupty???

No thanks, at least for now.

I am currently building a fire safe into a hard drive. In a back corner of my shop I am taking a 2' x 2' safe and drilling a hole into it for usb wires. I am then going to seal the hole using a 3Hr. rated fire chaulk. The 2x2 is for heat dissapation although my 1TB hard drive never feels hot nor has any cooling fans or openings. I am placing 2 1TB. drives into it and and setting the information to sinc on both. I currently have a drive I take home and sinc once a month. I have about 450Gb currently of artwork and can't immagine loosing it.

I ended up going with JugleFile, which is Amazon based. Software runs $3/mo (much better setup than the online "file folder" stuff), and then it's $.15/mo/GB of storage. Seems like a solid solution, and there is no contract.

I like: CrashPlan, BackBlaze, Amazon S3. Once you're past your initial (slow) upload uploads are incremental and no big deal. It's not the services that are slow, it's that your ISP does not give you much upload bandwidth. Bandwidth from an ISP is almost always asynchronous with a much, much smaller limit on upload for various reasons.
