Gradient in a Complex Path

Hello,

In Illustrator, I'm attempting to create a solid gradation of a compounded path (like B.)
Keep ending up with the results of A, where every shape has an independent color application.

Also trying to avoid using a clipping mask.

Not really sure how to pull it off. Any thoughts?

Select all objects. Select the gradient tool. Press and drag the tool. Rather than applying it via the gradient window.

Shapes need to be combined. Sometimes Illustrator gets all wonky and you have to uncombine and then re-combine. On the mac, the shortcut to combine is command 8
