Hello-

The forums here have a lot of useful information, but just as soon as I think I've come to a decision I learn something new about one product vs another.

I joined a few weeks ago when I started my search to replace ONYX Poster Shop 10.x w/3 printer license. Our dongle was stolen...along with every other USB thumb drive in the room...I doubt "they" had any idea what they took. The drive probably has somebody's photos or music on it by now.

The State of California can't afford to replace it, so a major downgrade is in order.

I've heard all kinds of claims by different product reps, so I'm about to post a question or two...I thought I'd crawl out of the woodwork and say hello first.

This site is an excellent resource, thanks!

James

Hi James,

Sorry to hear about the theft; it's a shame crime is on the rise constantly here in Socal. Let us know if you ever need anything; we're located in Chino,CA, not too far from where you are so feel free to stop by anytime and say hello. :Welcome:

Best regards,

If you file a police report Onyx might send you another dongle is what they used to do. Welcome from SoCal also!

Welcome James...

I am sorry to hear about the theft, but wouldn't your insurance company cover the loss?

We're "self-insured", which probably makes more sense to the State than to me. Sadly, there's a $5,000 deductible unless there's a "forced entry" (broken door or window, etc.). Nothing of the sort, somebody used a key...probably in broad daylight.

There are so many levels of people with keys to spaces on campus (Police, EH&S, Maintenance, HVAC, Custodial, Recycling..they all have keys and have been busted for using their keys to steal!) that most stuff that goes missing does so without a trace. PD shows up and takes a report, and everything falls into a black hole unless I eventually tell the PD who did it.

Funny (or sad)...as I near the end of my 25 years here, I've stopped trying to understand why everything is an uphill struggle and mostly focus on finding shortcuts that I have to pretend don't exist. Thus, my search to replace our copy of Onyx RIP for the best price I can find.

Thanks for the suggestion, for sure!

You let one prisoner out of their cell and look what happens. I'd take it out of the jail guards salary to pay for a replacement. How will you be able to print license plates without a rip?

You think that theft was bad, just wait until the State of California starts to steal from you.

Hmmm. This must be a policy they've changed or don't offer proactively (or perhaps I didn't ask the right questions), they never mentioned or asked for a Police Report.

I talked to them, and they acknowledged our owning the software (even gave me the serial number of our dongle) and the best they would do was to make a note in their system so as to know if somebody calls them for a maintenance contract. I'm not holding my breath.

Talking to an Onyx Senior Sales Manager didn't get me much farther, other than to offer me a small discount, lowering their price on a much smaller package than we already own to a cost slightly more than the shelf price of the other comparable products I'm now looking at. I tend to avoid vendors whom I find to be inflexible, if I can.

Thanks for the idea!
