GX300 Connection Issue

Please be patient with me as a newvbie here, having never owned a cutter. But I've owned and worked on dozens of wide format inkjet printers, all HP products.

I picked up a used GX300 cutter about a year ago and have just tried getting it working. I'm familiar with hooking up printers but this device has me stumped. I'm using a desktop computer with Windows 10 64 bit. I've also tried a laptop with Windows 7 32 bit and no change in the problem. I've downloaded the appropriate drivers for each OS from the Roland website.

Some background: I got the cutter free when I purchased an HP Designjet Z5400 from a local college auction. The cutter had a note on it that said the motherboard needed replacing and "Needs company to install drivers on board". (Not sure what that means.) It included a spare motherboard but I wasn't certain if the spare board was the new one or the old one. I downloaded a copy of the owner's manual and I got it to load the vinyl. It let's me use the menu to cut a demo from the menu page. But couldn't get it to connect to the computer. So I put in the other board to see if that was the problem. When I turn on the cutter now I get the message "GX-300 function firm J210 Push enter key". I push the enter key and get a brief message that says "GX-300 Function Firm Start" The carriage moves slightly, the red light on the carriage comes on and the display reads "Check Cropsensor Error 35(b)" and the red light stays lit. That's it. So I powered down and manually moved the carriage all the way to the left and power back on. The same sequence happens but the carriage moves back to it's home spot before showing the same error message. I haven't been able to find out what error 35(b) means, using google, anywhere when searching. I've only been able to find the owner's manual online, no service manual that I've come across. I've also searched on this forum but haven't found anything that addresses this error message.

I put the other board back in and now can still do a demo cut but still can't get a connection going. I downloaded a copy of CutStudio and when going to the properties, I push the button "Get From Machine" to set up a paper size but get an error saying 'The Machine is Not Responding". So definetly have no connection with the cutter.

I've downloaded the drivers from Roland and installed them but can't get a connection going with either board. I keep getting an error in the print queue. I'm connecting with a USB cable directly from my computer to the cutter. I know the cable is good because it's the same one that works with my inkjet printer. I don't know if the motherboard is causing the problem or if I'm just doing something wrong with the connection process. I've hooked up dozens of HP Designjet printers over the years (I do repairs on them) so I'm familiar with connection problems. But can't seem to see where I'm going wrong with this one. And have no idea what or where the crop sensor might be located so I could check it and what I should be looking for that would generate that error message. I'm assuming it's on the carriage but not sure.

I realize this is a very old cutter but it appears to still work well, judging by the demo it put out so I'd like to get it working to use for personal use. I would sure appreciate it if anyone can shed some light on these problems. Or can tell me if a service manual exists for these machines and where I could source one. Thanks in advance.

Looks like the original board has a USB problem. The crop sensor is a optical sensor on the tool carriage. I'd need to check the manual to see, if your cutter even has one.
Check the new board for a dip switch and set it the same way, as on the old board. This could solve your problem.

Unfortunately it is an older unit and the Main Board is no longer available. Would be nice if Roland had a 30” model.
if a 24” will work, try a GS2-24. It’s only $1995.00

Driving the cutter with CutStudio is all I've tried so far. Any suggestion for a different program to try? Is there a microsoft update that interferes with the communication to the cutter? I've run into that problem with older wide format printers. Does the message about the "Firm" have anything to do with needing to update firmware on the board? ("GX-300 function firm J210 Push enter key". and "GX-300 Function Firm Start") I don't know what that means.

I'll check for the dip switch. Don't recall seeing one but will check again. This board also has a another (parallel?) port next to the USB connector and I have a cable that I can use to connect to that and then plug into a USB port on the computer. I may try using that and see if it makes a difference. I've never run across a bad USB port that prevents communication. I don't know how to repair something like that.

I appreciate the offer to check the manual. Is this a service manual? Is it maybe available online? I'm guessing the red light I see on the carriage is what the crop sensor is trying to read when it passes a mark on the platen maybe? That's been my experience with wide format printers. The reflection of the light is detected and tells the carriage it's detected the edge of the paper. So maybe the sensor isn't picking up the reflection?

I've seen main boards available on Ebay but in the price range that makes it unreasonable. I saw one that the seller is selling for $500 and he said it has a problem connecting to a computer, same as mine. There's others that are brand new and sell for around $1500. This is just a hobby and I have no desire to invest that kind of money. If I can't get it to connect I may just try to sell it for parts only. I just hate to see a good cutter go to waste. (And I enjoy the challenge.)

So I have one main board that apparently works fine but won't communicate. And another board that throws the 35(b) error at start up so I don't know if it will communicate because I can't get past the error with the crop sensor. I suppose I could try to dismantle the carriage and try to find the crop sensor but I'm concerned I may damage something else making it completely unusable. I would rather just sell it off to someone who could use it as a parts machine.

I sure appreciate you guys taking the time to reply. I'll update as I go and maybe others might have some other suggestions that have some experience with this or similar models. I apologize for my lack of knowledge. I'm comfortable with wide format printer work, but I'm not very familiar with cutter components and their functions.

Stop wasting your time and energy with an old outdated, obsolete cutter. Buy a new cutter.
It will run with VersaWorks.
However, I don’t believe your problem is with the software. I believe you need a new main board. Unfortunately, the errors you are getting her not listed in the service manual.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not really in need of a cutter. This one sort of landed in my lap and thought I'd give it a shot to fix. But thanks much for the advice.

This service manual you speak of; is this something available on line by chance?

Thanks!
