hacked emails

How do you know if your email has been spoofed?

On a daily basis I get emails from previous customers with links to get rich schemes, viagra, bank logins, etc. Obviously they were not sent by them but it appears that way. Annoying yes, but other than your recipient telling you is there a way to know it has happened and/or prevent it from happening?

Other than the obvious, that being, don't give out your password, use a strong password, don't allow other sites to "login" using your current email and password. I don't think there is really anyway to tell if you've been hacked. I have never had it happen personally but usually when I get a suspicious link from someone who I know didn't actually mean to send it I give them a phone call or shoot them a text to make sure they know to change their password. Also, make sure you have a backup email set and it will usually send you an email at the backup email when there is a password change. Using google you can make it so you can only login from specific locations now so it's pretty tough to be hacked! Especially since they use your cell phone to set these locations!
