Half the class is bummed out...

Having computers doesn't make them spoiled, it makes them potentially prepared for the realities of their field. It's hardly "spoiling" when it's the norm. I suppose you think people that have indoor plumbing are spoiled too?

Now clearly hand skills are still very important and any good university design program will require them but really, is an "I'm an old codger!" post necessary in every thread?
You sound like a bitter old man. :Big Laugh

Hey atleast ya get a free volume license key from the school but agreed that there is breeding for competition going on. She should make them sign a non-compete clause haha!

Wish I was able to attend classes like that instead of wasting ink, tees, vinyl, and money on learning how to do it myself..I guess im bitter :)

I came from the macintosh in the classrom era with Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? and of course the all time classic Oregon Trial! Now those where the days..

God I hated Quark when I used it. I think the last version I used was v3 or v4. At the time they did not even have undo's. That's right, except for maybe 1 or 2 functions, if you made a mistake you could not undo your last move, not even once. I commend anyone that could get anything done on that software. At the time, Indesign version 1 came out and even though it was buggy it was already light years ahead of Quark. Quark was too slow and stupid to realize this (IMO) and took too long to adapt

raising my hand high as another Quark HATER!
when i was studying graphic design the only page layout program being taught was Quark (v4). the beta version of InDesign came out just as i was finishing school, so never had formal training in InDesign.

i remember calling Quark support for some stupid Quirk issue... and got their usual, snotty take-it-or-leave-it response. so i mentioned, that I was using InDesign beta and my days with Quark were numbered. i remember him saying "yeah right... what are you going to do when no service providers can accept your files."

when i got off the phone, i was thinking "gawd i hope he's wrong" ...by InDesign 1.5 (i think) i was converting all my Quark files to InDesign! :clapping:

in 2008, i started working with a particular group of high school students, committing to participate from Sept. - Dec. The following year when they asked for my help again, i said "not unless they students have Adobe Creative Suite" (they already had Photoshop and Illustrator). Got a call two weeks later... they bought CS! in 1997 when i wan't to take an Illustrator course.... even the jr. colleges in my area only offered Photoshop courses... you had to go to a university for Illustrator courses.

ha ha QUARK... you suck!

I too started on quark in college. Terrible and had almost an elementary feel too it even at that infancy in computers. I think I may have had corel at home for my comparison.

Years later, I worked at a small publishing co and they used quark also for their layouts. This was 10 years later and I DIDN'T SEE ANY DIFFERENCE in the quark from a decade earlier. Shortly after, they adopted indesign and they haven't looked back. Had quark kept with the times, and had a good solid up to date version , indesign would have never been needed.

Yes, quark can suck it.

Wouldn't a potential student be far better off getting an internship in a profession like graphic arts, culinary arts ext.. However if they did that they wouldn't become the slaves of society -- our banker friends so badly want them to be. The only debt there is no way out (other than death) is the student loan-- go figure.

Pretty much all design schools require internships as part of the degree requirements. All the good ones anyway. The OP's wife is teaching a HS course. Culinary schools also require intensive on the job training, etc. Most degrees of any sort now require field experience, if the university isn't offering field experience as part of their curriculum you/your kid/whatever should look for another school.

The point is you don't need a classroom setting to teach these disciplines at all period. ESPECIALLY, NOT FROM A PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL. The basic HS education has been forgotten and de-emphasized in the over coddling of our future generation. The fact that a high school can find the money for a graphic arts department by raising taxes within the community on all business and members within is socialism. That is not curriculum that tax payers should be forced to fund on some whim of the administration. This year alone we are going to see more municipalities than ever before in history go bankrupt -- because of this vary same nonsense within society..

Is that at Queens Creek HS?

No... A High School in a different district. One of her kids has started a T-Shirt clothing line with a big cartel website and is planning to pay for his college making tee's.

All this gear comes from the Federal Government through a program they call 'C.T.E.' I think that means "Career Technical Education". They have similar rigs for Video Production, Photography, IT/Computers, Printing (offset/digital), etc...

I guess it is the woodshop and autoshop of the modern era.

here is a link if you want to learn more..

"The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Section at the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) will make available secondary reserve funding in the amount of $200,000 from the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 for the award of competitive grants." The money comes from the Arizona state.
I guess Arizona gave up on the idea of the traditional education when they placed dead last amongst all 50 states http://www.morganquitno.com/edrank.htm

Would be cool if they were made to switch off between the macs & pcs halfway through each quarter/semester. Wouldn't hurt for all of them to learn to go back and forth between different OSes, when I first started here about 6 months ago I went through Mac shock for a little while learning the nuances of only having one mouse button and the different keyboard shortcuts, as well as figuring out where everything was as far as system settings & whatnot goes. Hell, I still have trouble navigating in Finder from time to time as well cause I was always so used to Windows Explorer.

You know you can install a 2-button mouse right? That'll solve 98% of the differences. Re-label your keys if you want too. ;)

99.9% of design agencies are mac, only in niche print shops (like signage) will you have designers working on pcs.

Why? You can enable right-clicking on a mac mouse. You just have to make sure that you are on the right side for sure, but the option is there, just have to enable it.

Now see, this is exactly what I'm talking about, I had no idea you could do that. I don't really use the Macs that much anyway so it hasn't been an issue, and when I do use them I'm using the prepress guys' Macs, so I like to be respectful and not switch things around, 'cause I know it aggravates me to no end when someone switches settings on my machine.

We have one iMac next to the embroidery machine, so I end up finding this stuff on my own while I'm waiting for thread changes etc.

I'm one of the few freaks that likes to do everything on the PC though. The only reason that there is even 1 Mac is due to my dad getting it hoping that it would be better for him, but he found it to be a pain in the ass and was just going to toss it after buying it just a month before. So I took it to run Netflix or to just play around with while I'm waiting on the embroidery machine if there is nothing else to do.

Every mac mouse ever made is instant carpal tunnel. Jonathan Ive is an amazing industrial engineer but he can't make a mouse for ****. :noway:

I use logitech stuff as well. Mouse, keyboard, and speakers. Can't beat it. I do have a logitech G15 (keyboard) hooked up to the iMac instead of the little one that came with it.

I have a G510 on my big design computer (PC).
