Hello from Australia

Hello,

My name is Idulas and I have come across your forum recently while browsing the sign making resources. Reading the posts I can see most people have great experience and knowledge of the industry and I admit I feel a bit nervous posting here. I would like to ask you for your opinion. Even though I do not want to design signs as such, I thought you could still let me know if I am too naïve or if my plan could work out. I am a newbie and I very much hope that I would not offend anybody with the simplicity of my post.

A bit of background….I have been living in Australia (so hello from Sydney) for some time but I come from Europe originally and I am planning to move back there later this year. I have 2 year old twins and I have to support myself somehow.

I have come across many businesses here in Australia which supply “name labels” for kids – the vinyl stickers with just name and a picture you can put on kids’ lunchboxes, bottles, toys, you name it… you have the idea. The more I think about it, the more I would like to start business like that once I move to Europe.

I have been looking around for about 4 months now, trying to find out more about adhesive labels, printers, label making software etc. I think I need some good printer, computer and some label making software to start with. I assume I can get the vinyl labels ready to be print on from some supplier. I think that should be it but I have never worked in this industry, so there are days when I feel I could get this running, some days I feel like I can’t.

I know this is far from the sign making, so I apologize if you find my post irrelevant. I am sure for you guys this sounds like an ape typing the post J
.
I am after your honest opinion – do you think I could be able to do this “name labels business” without the previous experience or am I missing too much? I am very much willing to learn and explore this avenue but at the same time I do not want to jump into something where I have not much chance to succeed. I would never attempt to design signs, my admiration to all of you! This is what I do not know – would creating the simple name labels be relatively easy to pick up “on my own” – without attending courses and working for the industry? What would you think, am I crazy to entertain this idea?

And one more question – could anybody recommend a desktop printer which might be suitable for this kind of printing (adhesive vinyl labels, water & heat resistant- eg suitable for dishwasher, freezer, microwave…)? I would only need to feed it with A4 and smaller sizes. When I am searching the net, all printers recommended for printing on vinyl seem too big – understandably, as they are recommended for normal sign making. Are the “standard” digital inkjet desktop printers able to do this job? Would I need some special ink?

If you read this far, thanks a lot. Your opinions would be much appreciated.

Wishing all lots of success in your businesses,

Idulas

Welcome from South Texas!!!
In your situation I would consider use a supplier like Stouse simply because the risk is not that big but still achieve the same results.
There are many merchants here and I am sure of in Australia that can help you out. It is a challenge to operate and maintain a business when you know you have to cover revolving expenses to keep your equiptment going.
Then once you are moving at a good speed you can look at what to add for your business. Good luck!!!

welcome, I think you could do the name sticker thing. Just keep doing research and you will be able. Look to maybe intern or work at a sign shop to get some experience with some equipment and techniques.

:Welcome:Welcome from Northern IL, near Chicago!
There are a lot of letterheads in Australia, and maybe some near you! Send me your email and I will put you in contact with them. I just made a trip there to Queensland to the Jondaryn woolshed and Brisbane area for a month. What a surrealistic beautiful country you have! I just know you have to go where your heart is;
just post your email if you can,
nice to have you drop in!
p.s. I don't post a lot here but do read; they have a lot going!

Welcome from Western Canada.
I believe it would be easy enough to produce the labels you speak of. However , if that is your only focuss , you then need to set up a network for distribution. Going store to store, cold calls will take a lot of time..some of it sucessful. You should be thinking wholesale to distributors. Then they do the selling. You will receive much less per unit but you only have to convince a few distributors..not every little ( or large) store to carry your product.
Good luck.
