Hello all! I found your great forum while searching for information about a problem that developed with my Roland CM-24. After storing for only a month my parallel connection failed... plotter would cut actual codes, not my graphic. After exhaustive uninstalls, re installs, cable checks, setups on other machines....etc Roland Tech suggested to connect serially. One problem, their cable IS different than what I was able to find locally. As is always the case I had a job waiting and needed to know if my plotter was hosed (stressing) or just the parallel connection. I figured finding the pinouts for this cable to make my own would be easy...WRONG. After days of searching, I found a detail in Roland's User Forum sent to someone with an MDX-20 Engraver. After careful comparison to the details in both user manuals (Roland's site) I decided to try it.
Bottom line, IT WORKS! WHEW.
So, I would like to contribute this pinout information I have so that maybe someday somone else might get it done faster.
(DB9 female)-->(DB25 male)
frame ground ->- cable shield (ground the shield at the computer end only)
1 & 8 ->- 20
2 ->- 2
3 ->- 3
4 ->- 5 & 8
5 ->- 7
6 ->- 4
7 ->- 6
I can't say that this is the same spec as the XY-RS-23A cable that is recommended, but I do have full bi-directional functionality (ie-read width) with no errors.
I'll probably still order the nice molded cable, but at least now I know I don't need to replace the cutters motherboard right away.
Have a great day everyone, I gotta get cuttin'!
PS- I would like to give props to Roland Tech Support for their quick response to my e-mails. I am waiting for an actual pinout from one of their service tech's and will update if there are any differences to the one above.
