i'd imagine you're reverse-engraving method will hold up just fine. plexi and paint hold up just fine outdoors. use mechanical fasteners, as adhesives will only have the strength of the bond between the paint/plexi.

Thanks for the advice on using mechanical fasteners, so far the ones I have made I have hung with silicone and double sided tape, I hadn't thought of the possibility of the paint pealing off the back of the plexi.
