How did my uncle do this?

So when my uncle and I would make graphics, we would generally make them for cars. We used to race, so we were always "lettering a racecar" as we'd call it. On his flexi program, he had an outline of a 1988 monte carlo, both sides, top, rear and front bumpers. How did he do this? Was this a template, or was it something that he created on the computer himself?
