How do I fit an object to a path?

I'm trying to create a rope border around an oval. Is there a way to repeat a section of rope around the oval so they are all the same proportion?

I can do it around a perfect circle and it looks fine, but when I compress it to an oval, it squished the top and bottom segments.

Any ideas or tricks are appreciated...

It's better to have two hands than one glove.

When you fit some object to a path it is necessarily distorted. In order to do what you want you'd need some sort of procedure that will add and/or remove rope segments rather than merely stretching them.
