How long should printer parts be available?

Are there any federal laws requiring printer manufacturers to supply parts and support for a specific period of time after the date of sale?

My recollection is that the requirement is for seven years from the last date of manufacture.

there are for auto parts. but i guess that's different. gotta keep those cars running so the govt can tax the hell out of the gasoline. maybe if they taxed the hell out of our inks there'd be a law ?

In searching around all I can find is that it's largely a matter of state laws rather than federal. For example, this is what the law is in California for any item that wholesales for more than $100.00:

Every manufacturer making an express warranty with respect to an electronic or appliance product described in subdivision (h), (i), (j), or (k) of Section 9801 of the Business and Professions Code, with a wholesale price to the retailer of one hundred dollars ($100) or more, shall make available to service and repair facilities sufficient service literature and functional parts to effect the repair of a product for at least seven years after the date a product model or type was manufactured, regardless of whether the seven-year period exceeds the warranty period for the product

I am not really sure but have been told that they must be available for the expected lifetime of the machine. Most elecro-mechanical machines these days have an expected lifespan of, what I am told 3-5 years... Just what I have been told by a few folks, not sure if it true or not...

the magnum-moss warranty act of 1975 seems to address this situation, however, it applies only to "consumer goods" and not to goods sold for commercial purposes.
