How to dismiss a worker

I had 20 to 35 employees at a time over the years.
Sometimes one of them does not fit into the team.

I would set it up with a conversation.
Two weeks later, hand him a $100 bill and tell him why he is gone.

... You don't listen
... You are unteachable.
... I don't like your attitude.
... Not enough work to keep you.

Always honest. Always point blank.

They deserve to know why.
They don't want to hear that you are sorry.

I had one dude tell me I could sell my boat and use the money to keep him on.

How do you do it?

Short and to the point... Don't turn it into a drawn out discussion.

Make sure you have a VERY good paper trail or documentation for the reason you're letting them go.

Never do it alone... have HR or a dependable witness in the room.

Whatever the setting, do not let the situation arise where they are between you and the door.

Do your homework and preparation before hand. Do they have company property in their possession... key to the facility... access to computers. Know how much, if any, vacation time or benefits they have coming - and have a check already cut.

. . . do not let the situation arise where they are between you and the door.

Once upon a time . . . once . . . it got ugly.
UGLY.

Always did it myself.
Could have pussed out. Order some one else to do it.

It is the hardest thing to do.
Sucked. Every time.

But, needs to be done.

San Diego is a big market. We trade good employees back and forth.
Over the years.

But, some just don't have what it takes.

Employers know what I am saying.

I have no problem telling a supplier to take me to lunch
and ordering the calamari dish.
Then shaking his hand and saying goodby.

That is actually fun. You failed to dance for me, monkey.

But, employees are real people.
Then again, I am not a charity.

And I am not selling my boat.

It's better to have two hands than one glove.

I find a hidden trapdoor is cleaner and less messy than putting down plastic and getting out the 9mm.

Boom truck accident. Perfectly legal.

My longest workday ever..... 32 hours.

Sent two boom trucks out Interstate 8. Over the mountain from San Diego
and down the other side.

We were taking down a big three stick Texaco sign in the middle of nowhere.
Yes, Texaco, that long ago.

I went ahead of the two slugs on the way back home.

I was driving the flatbed with a 28 foot trailer full of the free pipe.

Guess what happened 30 minutes after I passed them and headed for home.....

A semi truck full of computers plowed boom truck #1 into and onto boom truck #2.

Busted off the crane of #1 and put them both in the ditch.

Freakin' disaster. Like it was yesterday, about 26 years ago.

Driver of #1 ... large gash on his arm. Driver #2 unharmed.

I went back and, I don't feel bad about this, loaded up a mess of computers
and took them home.

Also had a guy get electrocuted to death on a service call.

Think about this when you want to match a font.

Between this abortion of a thread and the OP being best buds with Addie, I wouldn't worry about it.

and once again for my friends who can run a business yet make me ashamed to be a part of this industry:

Your - You own this
You're - You are doing this
