How to make a screen in Illustrator?

I am designing a logo that needs to be one color, but many shades of that 1 color. I have been using the gradient option, but that is not doing the job. How do you make a screen effect?

If you are using a PMS color, you should use percentages of that color rather than transparencies.

percentages gets my vote, because if anything overlaps in your design, the transparencies are altered by what is behind them
