How to print over an image twice

Good morning,

I'm going through the routine of getting a good print on some white static cling. As I read about this material, I can see that it is not the easiest material to work with. It goes from washed out with ink limits to fuzzy lines from pooling very quickly. Its hard to get that happy medium. I'm getting to end of things to try, the results are okay but I think they could be a little better.

One suggestion someone made was to do one print and then have the machine suck the artwork back in and go over it a second time thus allowing the first image to mostly dry. That way you are limiting the ink enough to get clean lines on each run but the second run will add more color. Makes sense to me.

Anyway - I'm on Flexi 8.1, basically I only use production manager. Does anyone know the procedure to have my printer do this?

I think you are meaning an overprint. But it would do it at the same time, just lay double ink. It wouldn't print, the wait, then bring back in and print again.

I would imagine if you print it once, and tell production manager to return to origin after printing, you could let it dry some, and resend the job again and it should lay right on top. Never tried it that way though, I typically just set overprint to 2 if printing on like clear vinyl or something where I need a lot of color.

I've tried all the overprint settings. Low ink limits and an overprint of 2 gives me the best picture, but if i turn up the limits slighlty for a move vibrant color, even that will start to pool a bit. If I set it low enough not to pool, the colors do not mix well, i can see all the individual colors which gives it a gritty look. I thought If I gave it even more time to dry it might help mix those colors and prevent pooling. It sounds like the "return to original posistion" is the setting thati'm looking for.

Do you know where that setting is in production manager?

I'm sorry, I can't find it. I thought it was there. Do you have versaworks? I know its possible there. Its in the cut controls area. You will have to kind of fool the machine if you don't really need a contour cut. Just place one on it anyway, then choose print only in that tab, which will allow you to check the box return to origin after printing. Then you could just run the print again. I really thought there was this same idea in Flexi, I will keep looking for it, but seems I have used it before for some reason.

And just thought of something else, make sure if you use this feature, you don't use any of the middle pinch rollers, or they will track right through your wet ink

what vinyl are you printing on ... i found that static cling from kapco works best on my xj .... try printing with overprint set on 2 and slow your head speed way down to give it more time between passes

Middle rollars are up, good to go on that. Any idea how to slow down the head speed in production manager? I'm using general Formulations, but have some Solvex on the way to try out. Any idea what brand you get from them, or do they make it ?

I will check the cut options as well. I do need to contour cut these anyways.

static cling is always an issue but on my rolands i have gotten the best results using the clear calandered vinyl setting and high quality setting. sometimes i have used the max density but only as a last resort because it takes longer to dry and out gas.

Off the top of my head, I think the head speed is in the printer control tab, then you will have to check a box to use custom setting because the speed will be grayed out. It will change depending on what profile you use, but you can try just cutting it back some and see what happens.

Print on normal white vinyl and mount to static cling. The setting for Roland takes forever to print. Try it you will do it from now on. For larger quantities sub it out to Stouse.

Print. Check off return to origin then print once more. If that is the route you want to go
