How was this made?

This appears to be Self Contained Epoxy Resin filled 1" Acrylic with LED illumination, mounted to flat aluminum with standoffs. Probably a blockout vinyl overlay for the faces, hard to tell from the photograph.

Basically, the 1" acrylic letter is hogged out in its back and LED ribbons are inserted before the letter is filled with epoxy resin, sealing everything in place. You can paint the returns or leave them clear and sandblast for diffusion if you want edge lit.

This is a push-through acrylic sign.

The face of the "box" is cut (routed, lasered, jetted, etc) to accommodate a cut piece of acrylic, which is then "pushed through".

Translucent vinyl is applied to the face of the acrylic shape (in this instance), and it is lit from behind. (You can also use opaque vinyl, or leave it bare) The return then allows light through. One may use clear, translucent, even colored acrylic, depending on the desired effect. You can also manipulate the height of the "push through" as well.

What makes the first example confusing, is the application of the offset hard shadow (black cut vinyl) applied to the "box" face. It adds a bit more dimension.

REALLY nice design that dips into the signmaker's bag o' tricks very well. Kudos to them!
