HP 5000ps - Gray/Magenta Issue

I don't use any software rips, but use the internal print driver. I always have an issue printing grays because it seems to bring in some magenta. I've spoken to quite a few people who have mentioned that HP 5000s combine other colors when printing grays in order to preserve black ink. Anyone know if this is true?

Most printers use 3 colours till the grey gets dark enough to start adding black ink.
