HP DesignJet 9000s Print Cartridge Replacement Problems

We recently purchased an HP 9000s printer that came with an extra full set of Seiko I Infotech brand inks. Today as a banner was printing, we noticed that the colors were off, and when checking the inks we found that the Magenta was empty. After taking the empty M out and replacing it with the new Seiko M, the screen displays:

"Open R Inkcover2"
"Check M Ink"

...so we open the cover, and it responds with:

"Replace M Ink"
"Close R Inkcover"

...then back to "Open R Inkcover2 Check M Ink"

...over and over again.

Do we need to reset something in the system? Recharge a chip? We have since charged the M ink and got ink to come out of the cartridge, but it's still displaying the same two messages.

Thanks!

You said that the cartridge you loaded was for an M series? I'm not sure that will work in a HP9000s. The number from Seiko for the 9000s ink should be IP6-702 for magenta. Look to see if that is located on the end of the cartridge that is viewable after being inserted into the machine.

Seiko branded Cartriges cant be used "chip code is different" so what to do........

insert the old Chip from HP Cartridge in the Seiko Cartridge and step to the maintenance menue and mark the Cartridge as none OEM and all works fine. But if you boot the machine new must every time mark the cartridge ! so you can use it with zero Chip data the rest of your inks.

Otherwise can be broken chip connector inside the machine ! the connector is bounded with a little spring and can demage very easy.

The cartridges we are using aren't the "M" series actually, that just was an abbreviation for Magenta, I should have spelt it out completely.

J Hill Designs, after checking the date on some of the cartridges, it looks the replacement we are trying to use was manufactured in February 2013. If these inks only have a shelf life of <12 months, then that may be the problem.

Wunder, we were thinking that we would need to change the chip out with an original HP cartridge as well, but the empty cartridge we took out of the 9000s was the same exact brand and series of our replacement. I don't think that the chip in the empty had been changed out either, since the sticker seals on the cartridge were still in tact.

We also tried changing out the chip with a different color cartridge that was manufactured in May of 2013, but we are getting the same results. Does anyone know of any way to bypass these types of messages? Hoping we can figure this out before the heads dry up, ha.

I really appreciate the help everyone!

not sure you can bypass the messages, but you can buy a new chip for under $20 and swap it out with that one to see if its a chip or reader problem

ok you are sure thats in fakt the same cartridge as used one before. Iam very sure that SEIKO ink cartridge not usable at 9000s with SEIKO Chips inside !!! there another Code on Chip FAKT !

Nothing else......use a flashlight and show into the cardtridge slot if you can see all connection Pins OK.

See Picture there is one demage and rest OK !!! is a little fine Pin with spring inside !

I'm sure that it's the same cartridge, yeah. Yesterday I also contacted the Seiko techincal support email and they responded today, saying that it should be a direct swap with no extra steps, but it doesn't seem to be working that way.

Does anyone happen to have a reliable chip source? I've found a few online stores and chips available on Alibaba, but it would be nice to get a recommendation. I will have to take a closer look at where the cartridge is making contact with the printer to make sure there is nothing blocking the path.

Well, after replacing all cartridges with new non-OEM ink cartridges, the printer is still giving us issues. Looks like we may have to resort to calling a tech out to fix it for us.

Hey Robert, I sent you a message but haven't heard back. I'd like to know if you guys have a working main board for sale, the Seiko IPB1.

We had a tech come up and take a look at the machine this week, and he thinks it may be the main board giving us problems. But then again, he also thought it was a few other things, like the ink cartridges, chips, the station that the cartridges are inserted into, but no dice as of yet after switching them out. It'd be cooler if our tech was actually familiar with this printer, I think he's just using trial and error at a rate of $180/hour.

Just as an update to this thread, the "techs" were not able to figure out what was going on with the printer. They replaced the mother board, cartridge assembly, some hoses, checked chips, ink carts, etc and never really got anywhere. Although they are charging us ~$1,800 for labor, so that's like an extra kick in the nuts. :corndog: (I really like this corndog emoticon)
