HP Designjet 9000S questions...

I'm buying a 2 year old used HP Designjet 9000s printer, dryer, and filter system for $4750 next week. I have seen the printer in use and seen the printhead test and everything looks great. They are buying a new printer with better resolution, thats the only reason they are selling.
I was wondering, is this a good price? Also, when I move it, what do I need to do?( Its going about 40 miles). Until I hook it up to a rip, can i do the daily maintenance procedures, so the printheads don't dry up?
Any advice would be appreciated.

We also have an HP Designjet 5000 dye printer. This printer is our next step in doing more work.

It also comes with a full set of inks. I'm aware of the printhead cost, I believe i can get them from Fieldcenter for about $1400. Is this true?

When moving this printer it is important to lock the printhhead carriage into place on the capping station. (there is a bracket that fits into place with three screws) make sure the waste ink bottle is empty and the media is removed from the machine (dismount the roll as well)
Use plenty of shipping blakets, bubble wrap and when strapping into the truck strap only to the sub frame. never over the top of the machine.
Wait a little while before switching to 3rd party ink so you can determine whether the machine is functioning well or not (putting 3rd part inks in will add another variable to troubleshooting if something is not working from the start)
Plan to replace 1 printhead each year and plan to replace the caps and wipers within the first 3 months. Budget for this.
Make absolutely sure that you perform the daily maintenance on this machine (no...really) stay away from the HP 791 ink. I would recommend the HP 790 or the Seiko equivalent (same ink)

PM me if you need help

Seiko inks

As mentioned above some end users are not getting good results with the new HP791 inks. We supply the Seiko brand which is the same formulation as the HP 790 (HP used to buy their inks from Seiko as Seiko was making the HP 9000, 10000 series plotters)

As much as that sounds like a good price, the printer is discontinued and hp is not longer "required" to offer support. they are now, and probably will for a next couple of years, but that may become an issue down the road. Just something to consider, as you could have issues down the road.

That being said, the HP9k's are pretty bulletproof IF (IF IF IF IF IF) you take care of them. use the right inks (HP has updated profiles on their website for the 791 inks, which corrects for the problems that a lot of people had. there are still issues with some of the inks, and HP is aware of that). keep it loaded with media so the printer can clean itself. do your daily mantenance (and do it well, only takes about 5 mins). keep it clean and out of a bad environment, and you'll get years of use out of it with only the annual PM parts replacements (about 2k for parts & install). The K/M printheads in that machine are tough, but you have to baby them. if you run the crap out of it, it'll run like a top.

So they're getting a printer with better resolution? Dang, I've been running mine for three years now and have photographs on the wall that are amazing.
It's been a workhorse. Never have replaced a print head or a capping station.
At that price, I'd jump all over it.

Picked up the printer today. The nozzle test shows the printheads are in great condition. I'm appreciative of all the feedback guys, Thanks!
