GCR is grey component replacement. It's the concept of replacing color with black to achieve optimal grey balance and less CMY usage for the reproduction of a color. The theory is that GCR optimized color will have the best balance and output in all light settings. This is my over simplified understanding of the process.
There are various methods that people employ but for us it's been to maximize production output color by balancing the color gamut to limit high peaking colors and mirroring across all of our devices. Our goal is simply balanced sellable color at the fastest possible speed.
