HP Printers

How long are these printers supposed to last? My wholesale rep told me about 3 years. But, I'm curious how much life I can get out of mine.

seems like not even that long.
we still do quite a bit of printing on my roland sc545-ex (circa 2006)
i would think as long as hp is providing printheads and ink, you are fine.
like a car, one day it becomes a PITA and it is time for a change

yea. I had some issues today with a print job and couldn't figure out why it was jamming. It was a trailer wrap that had a line drawing on it with minimal ink. i felt like i was wasting material because there was hardly anything on it, and it kept hitting the heaters.. It was Arlon SLX..I thought maybe it was because there wasn't any ink and it was lighter in weight...but I don't really know.

Arial - it's almost helvetica
About 1/2 as long as every other printer available.
A lot of people here still run the old SP Roland's. Mutahs and mimakis too. HP has figured out how to sell parts and eventually brick them.

They are still selling yours as new so there is no EOL date.
When they drop that date it's minimum of 5 years support from then.

You dont run it nearly enough that it wouldn't last longer than that 5 years.

i would think it's barely through the break in period

They started selling it 6 years ago. Add 5 to that and if you bought it new it's at least 11 years.
Previous (310 which actually has EOL) model even before that. Close to 15 years of support.

It has to end at some point.

they make me a little nervous with the inks AND printheads having expiration dates
seems like youare at HP's mercy

we have had hp "large format inkjets" since 1992, i think, we had the first tabloid size color inkjet (11x17) when people still thought you could only print from a laser printer. i think that first model was $3300

The printheads are consumable and replaced yearly depending on how much you use it. They are $135 each head and there are 6 of them. I go through the inks well before they expire..But I'm guessing it has more to do with the latex ink than it does being at HP's mercy. And it's kind of a trade off, right? Roland printers have really expensive print heads? along with gumming up if you don't use it often?

You can use expired ink without worrying too much too. I wouldn't use something that's 6-12 months past expired... But I've known people who have and it didn't do anything to their machine.

Look at the 260 - hp stopped supporting it a (few?) Years ago. You can still buy after market ink and after market heads for it... Although they're not as reliable.

Think of it like a car. Until your repair bill starts costing you more than buying a new printer... You don't need a new one. It's not going to magically break after 3 years like your sales rep wants you to believe - you may have a $500 repair bill in year 3... A $1000 in year 4... A $2000 in year 5... Etc. But some people run 3-6 rolls per day on their printer and it still lasts 10 years, so you don't have anything to worry about.

It'll last as long as you want it to, and you decide your business has outgrew it and needs something better.
