Right out of the gate you are pissing into the wind by being restricted to the use of one font only to design with and not a good one at that in this case. I'm sure he will be happy with it since he will take credit for the idea and art direction he gave you to work with.
Tell him you will try to work with his concept but ask him if he's open to other designs. If so, you might be able to work up something a lot better and you will both win.
