Jury duty on a Monday Morning. Have to be there at 0900 just to wait until 1100 to go to the court room. Listen to the judge go on about the process of being a member of the jury. They call 27 people up and the prosecuting and defense attorneys give a 5 min speech about what they are looking for in a jury. The judge goes over all the indictments. ALL 159 of them.
Time 1215 Lunch time. Be back at 1315.
1330 the judge shows back up. 1400 we get to the first question to the jurors. I am still in the back and cant say anything to any of the questions. They are excusing jurors right and left until there were only 4 left in the back seats including me.
1630 they finally call me up to the jury box place ask me all the questions that they asked the previous people. In the five questions up til now they have not asked if anyone knew the defendant.
The question comes up. I raise my hand like I was told to do. The judge asks me how do you know the defendant.
I said well your honor he was arrested 2 weeks ago for breaking into my shop and stealing some equipment. You should have seen the look on the defense attorneys face as well as the judge and most of the other jurors.
Apparently this guy who was my neighbor was involved with 3 other guys breaking and entering into homes back in 2009. From what I got, from the info provided he was just an accomplice in those. I was excused from the courtroom. I dont think there will be a juror that will side with him now. Probably going to have to get a whole new panel now.
The irony in it all is priceless.
By the way, his son will be back on Thursday with his mother. Hope we can keep this kid out of trouble since I don't think he will want his dad around anymore.
