So I'm lettering a painted block wall, 2' letters. The customer insists on vinyl, no paint. It's a landlord/tenant issue. No holes, no paint. Does anyone have any experience with cut vinyl on textured walls? I talked to 3M and they said the only way to do it is print/lam/cut Envision 480.

Have you looked into Alumigraphics? I've never worked with it, but have seen it on local stores, Dominos has it on their brick, outside walls. They have a floor grade and wall grade.

I had to use 751 on cursive small letters on a textured wall for Toyota. PITAAAAAAAAAA!! But once I got the letters off the transfer tape. (which I almost think it would have been faster if I put them up there by hand without it) I used a felt squeeg and heated them on the wall. Anything less then cast will NOT work.

How textured is the wall? What kind of wall?

Grab some vinyl and make sure it'll adhere good to the wall first. Depending on the texture / paint, it may not even stick.

If it does... it all depends on the type of texture. Is it REALLY textured? Then 480 is a good choice. If it's just slightly textured, we got away with using 3M cast sign vinyl. 480 is great for stuff like brick / cinderblock type texture. But I Doubt you want to buy a roll of 480 just for 1 job.

ikarasu, did you get many bubbles? I have the 2 handed 3M tool and I was just playing with Oracal 951 premium cast. Turned the heat down from 1000 to 400 degrees, and moved very quickly to avoid blistering, but was still getting a few bubbles. The extra time to pop a few is well worth the cost savings vs the 480 of course.

Thanks but that stuff still needs printing; if I go that route I'll just stick with the 3M 480.

Use the special brick/cinder block vinyl, use the heatgun or torch to melt it onto the wall.

if the wall has NOT been previously painted I wouldnt do it. Putting stuff on raw brick is a PITA I hope you are charging a ton

You can print it or not print it, either way
Thank you, but I'm putting red letters on the wall. Yes I could use Envision textured wall digital material, print it, laminate it, and cut it. But this post is me asking if there is a cut vinyl material that people have used / would recommend.

Like ams said, use a specialty vinyl. RoughRap seems to work pretty well. Just print to the colors you need and call it a day.

I personally don't know of a cut vinyl that would work, but now I'm curious.

I found this blog post, not sure if it helps you at all, but it's an interesting read at least.

Short answer is there is no cut vinyl designed to do that.

I will also say that we have laminated Cast Cut vinyl to Avery 1405 and it worked well.

So the FIRST thing I should've done was put a pencil to it - between material costs and quicker installation (on testing with cast vinyl I found that you move the TSA-4 about three times faster) I'd save about $150. Definitely not worth being a test pilot, I'm just gonna use the Envision 480 like y'all have been saying. Thanks everybody.
